As early as 1974 I thought about the benefits of computer knowledge. While in college I took "Basic Computer" and "Computer Programming". I don't remember much except that I enjoyed the classes and did well understanding the concepts and performing the exercizes.
Then other things took precidant over my life and the computer world didn't come back until 6 years ago 1995. Life was good and the sun was shining in Florida and I decided it was time for a change. Back to Michigan and a little computer training.
My sister Virginia gave me my biggest benefit. She was heavy in computer knowledge, gave me access to a computer with many different programs and tutorials. She eventually sold me my first computer for $500, the very one I was training on.
DOS, Word Perfect, and Lotus 123 were the first three programs I learned. I picked up a book at the library, which was a general tutorial for all three, each being only about 100 pages. Excellent training tool. At the same time I used Mavis Beacon (learn to type program) and Professor DOS (a DOS training program) to improve basic skills.
After less then 6 month I used a temporary work force company to see if I could sell my skills. My instructions were simple, find me computer work only. I stopped in and trained on their computer in the different word processing programs and waited.
Eventually, about a month maybe alittle more, I was hired. Ingersol Rand which is a big company making machine items as well as machines, hired me for two weeks while a regular worker went on vacation.
The ability that got me this temporary position was my familiarity with different word processing programs. They used a program called Ed-Word, as in edit word, or something like that. Anyway my pay was set at $10.something an hour. It gave me confidance because I considered that a very good start for freshly learned knowledge.
